The parish council arranged two consultative forums under the heading Parish Question Time in Old Wives Lees village hall between 4pm and 7pm on Friday 18th March and in Chilham village hall between 10am and 1pm on Saturday 19th March to invite the views of all parishioners on the key challenges and opportunities facing the parish and the practical steps it can take to address them over the course of its 4 year term of office.
These events were informal drop in sessions providing an opportunity for you to come along and meet your new Parish Councillors, to learn more about the work of the Council and to influence its priorities at a time of significant challenges and opportunities for rural communities like ours. Light refreshments were also be available.
There were displays that set out the powers and duties of the parish council, showed how the council currently spends its money including a map with photographs of the assets it owns and a Likes/Dislikes post it board for members of the public to express their views on parish matters.
The parish council displays can be viewed in the Useful Information column to the right of this column.
The local school children also produced their own displays of what they like or dislike about living in the parish.
Local groups and organisations were invited to set up stalls to showcase what they offer.
Groups submitting proposals for using the £160k s106 monies made available for Outdoor Sport, Provision and Informal Open Space in the parish as a result of a residential development in Bagham Place had the opportunity to present their cases.
More details regarding these proposals can be found in the Useful Information column to the right of this column.
The consultation is intended to provide the parish council with reliable evidence of parishioners views on a number of important parish matters and the outcome will be an evidence-based Consultation Report.
This Consultation Report will form the basis of a strategic priorities statement, which will be published ahead of the Annual Parish Meeting in April. This Statement would guide the business of the parish council for the remainder of its term.
The consultation was publicised to all properties in the parish using a leaflet distributed by the Parish Distribution Network.
The leaflet explained the objectives to be achieved by the consultation, included a factsheet about the parish council and a questionnaire to collect parishioners views.
The questionnaire gathered views on a set of agreed statements and provided the evidence on which to base the Consultation Report.
Parishioners were encouraged to attend one of the the exhibitions, find out more about the powers available to the parish council and then complete the questionnaire.
Any parishioner unable to attend the exhibitions was asked to complete the questionnaire and place it in collection boxes in Chilham Post Office or Chilham Shop by Wednesday 23rd March.
The Consultation Report was adopted by council at its October meeting together with the resultant Strategic Plan. Both can be viewed by clicking here.
